The Aussies are back in force for the final round of the Anzac Trans-Tasman Cup and the “Omni Insurance Brokers” Auckland Harbour Bridge Offshore 100 and final round of the 2016 NZ Offshore Powerboat Championship Series.
Freshly back from competing in the first two rounds of the World X-Cat Series in Fujairah and Dubai, Tom Barry-Cotter is keen to beat the Kiwis with their Aussie Offshore boat “Team 3” and team mate ”Steve Jellick”. There is nothing in the points between the leading kiwi team ”Profloors International Racing” (Wayne Valder and Chris Hanley). The pressure is on the Kiwi team who must finish both races in no less than second position to take out the win. “Valder“ won’t settle for second and he is looking for two straight wins as is fellow and rival kiwi competitor “FMI Racing” (Warren Lewis and Andrew Koolen), well known for his comment “loosing is not an option”. Two half hour races not to be missed when that flag drops, it will be all on!
The same can be said in the Superboat Lite class Australian team “Hogs Breath” (Jim Harris and Paul Fowlds) with 2350pts from kiwi team “Barley Legal” (John Shand and Mike Knight) on 2050pts, both teams keen to top the podium in the final round of the Anzac Trans-Tasman Cup in New Zealand before they head to Australia for the last four rounds of the Anzac Cup Series.
Saturday’s final two races for the New Zealand Superboat Lite Championship Series will also come down to the wire “Fuel Doctor” (Allan Branch and Alex Smith) 3602pts closely behind and improving every race “Outboard Pro” (Hayden and Delia Spiers) on 3488pts. Neither team can afford to drop a race if they want to wrap up their 2016 series with a podium finish.
Father and daughter team Tony and Charlotte Carson are hoping to finish off their season with a win in their Sports 200 Class boat “Red Steel” from close rivals “CRD Automotive” (Colin and Cory Dunn) and “D&H Steel” (Max and Jamie Carson).
Classic Class “Supercock Racing” (Aaron Fletcher and Shannon Martin) have lead this class for the whole season and will be out there on Saturday to hopefully make it seven out of seven round wins in the 2016 Championship Series. The Auckland race will bring out some other Classic favourites “Outlaw” and “Jackety Jack” – both boats owned by Grant Valder and both teamed up with some previous offshore drivers back to have some fun, “Gull Force”, “Topaz” and new team this season “Superstitious” (Brad Dribble and Noel Moselen).
Best viewing under the Auckland Harbour Bridge bottom end of Curran Street this Saturday 30th April; Jet Ski Racing will kick off the day from 10am, a different format for the final round will see the Superboats & Superboat Lites run from 12.30pm to 1pm, 60 mile classes from 1.15 to 2.15 and the final of the day will be second half hour race for the big guns 2.30pm till 3pm.
